This is a semi-rural practice with five full time partners and two lady partners each with a 2/3 share. Additionally, three full time assistant GP's are employed by the Practice. It covers the country of Nairnshire with about 10,000 patients, the majority of whom live in the town of Nairn. We practice from purpose built premises which have recently been modernised. The practice is fully computerised and as from April 1996 the practice has become a pilot site for a total fundholding project. We look after a small local GP hospital with 19 inpatients beds and casualty, physiotherapy and x-ray facilities. The practice employs two half time Practice Nurses.

The practice acts as Police Surgeons for Nairn District.

Although the partners have personal lists and do their own family planning, antenatal care, immunisations, child health surveillance, smears etc., the personal list system is not rigid and the GP Registrar is able to build up his own following of patients. They also hope to get the co-operation of patients in not smoking, and eating and drinking sensibly and taking some responsibility for their own health.

After an introductory period of 2-3 months, the GP Registrar is integrated into the one in six rota. One of the partners is always available in Nairn while a GP Registrar is on call, and if necessary the partner "takes the telephone", if the GP Registrar is out on call.

The practice has an out of hours centre at Nairn Hospital staffed by a suitably trained Nurse, and on-call duties are shared with the neighbouring Ardersier Practice on a rota of approximately one in twelve.

Arrangements for accommodation (either digs, rented apartment or house purchase) will be facilitated by the Practice. In the past GP Registrars have commuted from Forres, Culloden and Inverness, but when on call would live "on site", in a flat or room in the local hospital.

Prospective applicants are welcome to contact former GP Registrars (Dr Donald MacVicar, Culloden, Dr Steven Lynch, Dr Graham Gauld and Dr Alistair Forbes in Aberdeen, Dr Lindsey MacVicar, Dr Helen Macdonald, Dr Douglas Gray, Dr Moray Grigor and Dr Jonathan Ball in Inverness for "consumer assessments".
