There are only just over 1,400 patients in the Practice. However the Practice area is exceptionally wide and scattered over 4 islands. The island of Scalpay is connected to the island of Harris by a recently constructed bridge. The island of Scarp is inhabited only in the summer. The island of Taransay is presently occupied by the famous "castaways", the subjects of a BBC documentary series. The "castaways" are patients of the Practice although they have their own doctor on the island - Dr Roger Stephenson.
